Boys Coach Pitch

Coach pitch baseball in Little League is a modified version of traditional baseball designed for younger players who are still developing their skills. It is typically played by children ranging from 7 to 8 years old. In coach pitch baseball, instead of having the players pitch the ball, a coach from the offensive team pitches the ball to their own team members. This adjustment is made to ensure a more consistent and hittable pitch for the young batters.

Here's a general description of coach pitch baseball in Little League:

  • Pitching: The coach stands at a close distance to the batter and pitches the ball overhand to ensure a controlled and hittable pitch.

  • Batter's Box: The batter stands in a designated batter's box, ready to hit the pitched ball.

  • Batting: The batter attempts to hit the pitched ball with a regulation baseball bat. The focus is on developing basic hitting skills.

  • Fielding: The defensive team is on the field, and players are positioned in their respective positions. They work on fundamental fielding skills, including catching, throwing, and basic defensive strategies.

  • Base Running: Base running is introduced, and players learn the basics of running the bases in the correct order (first base, second base, third base, and home plate). Coaches often emphasize proper running techniques.  After hitting the ball, players should have a general understanding of the direction they hit the ball.  Players should also be learning the difference between running through vs. rounding the base. In Coach Pitch Baseball bases are 60 feet apart.

  • Inning Structure: The game is typically divided into innings, and each team gets a chance to play offense and defense during each inning.

  • Rules: Little League coach pitch baseball follows the basic rules of baseball, but some rules may be modified to accommodate the skill level and safety of young players.

  • Emphasis on Fun and Learning: The primary goal of coach pitch baseball in Little League is to provide a fun and educational experience for young players. Coaches focus on teaching the fundamentals of the game while fostering a positive and supportive environment.

  • No Competitive Pitching: Since the players are still developing their pitching skills, competitive pitching is not introduced at this level. The coach's pitch allows for more consistent hitting opportunities. Coaches pitches should be a flat (without an arch) overhand pitch. You may adjust the pitching distance if necessary.

Overall, coach pitch baseball in Little League serves as a developmental stage where young players can learn the fundamentals of the game in a supportive and instructional setting before progressing to higher levels of competition.
